ARTIST STATEMENT
Crown of Thorns, a discontinued Judy Niemeyer (JN) foundation paper-piecing pattern was given to me years ago. Despite no paper-piecing experience, I was intrigued. Always motivated by a good challenge, I jumped in. Not only did I end up with a stunning quilt, I met many new friends along the way and gained a substantial amount of knowledge of a new art form.
Let me just say right here, jumping in to learn to swim is not the best method. A new friend experienced in JN patterns warned me, “Your first should probably be a kit.” “Surely not,” I said. “I can do this.”
I cut out all the fabric templates and started the process; soon realizing colors weren’t going together as I expected. About half were recut, and I am proud of my color design. The machine quilting by another new friend brought my art to life.
