The Grape Quilt

The Grape Quilt, Machine Quilting
The Grape Quilt
I first saw “The Grape Quilt” at a retrospective of Susan Garman’s quilts at the Texas Quilt Museum in LaGrange. Hartman had re-created the quilt pattern from a vintage pattern of unknown source. I was thrilled to find the pattern at the Sales desk.

I made my own variations to Garman’s pattern, notably to the flowers. I chose deeper colors to contrast the layers and at the center of the flowers, I made a yo yo, to give it more pizzazz and depth.
The simple design is repeated throughout the quilt. The quilt center is composed of four whole blocks together, while the borders are composed of quarter blocks. There are 1,620 grapes in the quilt; each grape is stuffed with batting.
The quilt took 5 months to complete.
The Houston show will be the first presentation to the public.
